Every year, Frank Dubois, a professor at America University’s Kogod School of Business, studies the automotive industry to compile the “Made In America Auto Index.” The index assigns a numerical value to how American various components of a car’s production are – from the car’s components to the labor that assembles it. The Index has a few surprises, namely that many cars you might assume are all-American are only pretty-American (like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, only 75% domestic).
These fifteen cars are the current board leaders for being the most American-made cars on the market. Chevy and Ford dominate the list, but it’s a diverse bunch of autos.
The Equinox has a few parts made overseas, so it can’t hold the American standard fully on high, but it’s pretty close. Some of the parts used in the chassis, body and wiring were manufactured internationally, but everything else was made here at home. And it’s a bargain for a car that’s so locally sourced.
